Falmouth History: Not as old as neighbouring Penryn, Falmouth only really grew as a town and port in the early 17th century. Originally a settlement called Peny-cwm-cuic (Pennycomequick), this was where King Henry VIII chose to build a castle in 1540, which along with St Mawes castle, was designed to defend Carrick Roads. The fortress was called Pendennis Castle and it can still be seen and visited today. The castle was later strengthened during the sixteenth century to make it ready for the Spanish Armada.

The town of Falmouth itself was the brainchild of Sir John Killigrew, who founded a port there in 1613, the town grew steadily and soon overshadowed the older town of Penryn. In 1661 Falmouth received a charter from King Charles II and its parish church (consecrated in 1665) was subsequently named King Charles the Martyr, to celebrate this event.

The Falmouth Packet Service, carrying mail all over the world, operated from the port between 1689 and 1851, during which time the town grew in importance.

As well as operating as a port, Falmouth also had a significant fishing industry and the Fish Strand Quay was constructed in 1790. In these early days smuggling was also rife in Falmouth as it was throughout Cornwall, among the goods smuggled were tea, tobacco, rum, gin and brandy.

Falmouth’s position as Britain’s most south-westerly good harbour, meant it was often the first landing port for Royal Navy ships returning from battle, and it was the first to hear news of Nelson’s death.

The docks welcomed in many famous vessels, among them the HMS Beagle, carrying Charles Darwin home from his renowned voyage.

The railway arrived in Falmouth in 1863, bringing a new wave of visitors to the town, and it was from this time that it grew as a holiday destination.

By 1901, Falmouth had a population of over 10,000.
